Hello Parents and Guardians!

We are so excited to launch our blog this year! It has been a process, but hopefully it will serve the purpose of sharing upcoming events and happenings in our classrooms. With in this blog you will find information about events happening this month as a whole grade, as an immersion group, and in individual classes.

Each month there will be a new post describing that months events. As needed there will be additional posts. Please read through thoroughly for any questions you may have. If you have a question specific to your student please send a private email. Upcoming events are also listed to the right of the monthly posts.

Date: August 20th

Ms. Carsey's English Class

Language Arts

Spelling

This year we have a new reading program that we are very excited about! Along with this new program comes new spelling words. These words will be updated and available for download under the "english documents" "spelling" tab at the beginning of September. Students will come home with a list of words Monday and will be tested every Friday beginning the first week of September. If students get 100% on their spelling pre-test they will not be required to take the final test on Friday.

Reading

Students should be reading 20 minutes a day.

Math

This year math will be in Ms. Carsey's English classroom and we will be using a program called My Math. Each day students will be given some time in class to work on their math homework. If your student does not finish their assigned homework in class it will be sent home for homework. In addition to our My Math program students will also be using online programs such as, Prodigy and Imagine Math.

Social Studies

Ms. Zhou's Chinese Class

Chinese

This year, we will still use mandarin matrix. In total, we have 10 units. There are three stories in each unit, and we plan to spend one week on each story.

Aug 20-Sep 6 Review Grade1-3 vocabulary

Sep 9-26 Unit 6

Sep 27 Unit 6 test

Science

This year, science will be taught in Chinese, but all science tests will be in English. Thus, your kids need to spend time reviewing science in English. Reviewing materials are available on the Science page of our blog. From Aug 26 to Sep 11, we will learn about the water cycle. On Sep 12, there will be a unit test. The best way to be prepared for the unit test is to make sure kids can answer all questions listed on the homework page I send home.

Homework

Ms.Zhou’s homework is assigned on Mondays, and collected on Fridays. Usually, it contains two parts: Chinese and Science. In total, the maximum homework time is 60 minutes per week (15 minutes per day). Please don’t exceed the limit of 60 minutes per week, even if the work is not complete.

Thanks a lot!

Ms.Carsey & Ms.Zhou
